Genealogy Software and websites?

What is a good website to get to if I want to follow several generations of my family? I brothers and sisters continue ancestors too? And what is the best software for doing genealogy? I ask because I am blessed with the task of organize and preserve thousands of old photographs, and want to make descent graphics available to family members as I can.
