Where do I start, by a search for genealogy?

Well, the title almost says it all. Where do I start, for a search of genealogy. My parents, is a bit of a mystery to me. All I know already, my great-grandparents, names, and where they were. Any help, would be greatly appreciated. Being African American, makes it a little more difficult because of the fact of slavery, the lack or not the birth certificate, etc, etc … Thank you.

I hate to point out that the most important here is that there was no required public records anywhere in the world until the Civil War era here in the United States. England and other countries followed suit. No vital records were located, church records and records of the family before that moment.
