Trying to track my genealogy, english speaking Germans to please answer.?
I am of German decent and my surname is Niedermeyer, what I do know is that my family originally came from Bavaria and then immigrated to South Africa in WW1. When I tried to search for my Genealogy it came up with a different spelling of my surname it was Niedermayer, could my family change the spelling of this Niedermayer to Niedermeyer?
Please help
kind regards jade
Yes, surnames changed all the time, due to one thing or another. One reason was someone couldn’t read or write so the spelling became whatever it became once one of the children could write. The other is a family emmegrated and the name change occured either by the official creating the record or by the family. It’s possible that your family changed the spelling to one that was popular in a country that Africa was friendly too. Meaning that Niedermayer might have been Bavarian and Africa wasn’t friendly towards this country, while Niedermeyer might have been Dutch or something (not associated with Hitler) so they felt they would have less problems having this last name as opposed to changing it to another last name altogether.
