Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America $7.97 More than 27 million Americans today can trace their lineage to the Scots, whose bloodline was stained by centuries of continuous warfare along the border between England and Scotland, and later in the bitter settlements of Englandâs Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland. Between 250,000 and 400,000 Scots-Irish migrated to America in the eighteenth century, traveling in groups of families … |

Slaves in the Family $5.86 Writer Edward Ball opens Slaves in the Family with an anecdote: “My father had a little joke that made light of our legacy as a family that had once owned slaves. ‘There are five things we don’t talk about in the Ball family,’ he would say. ‘Religion, sex, death, money and the Negroes.’” Ball himself seemed happy enough to avoid these touchy issues until an invitation to a family reunion in … |

My Blue Heaven: Life and Politics in the Working-Class Suburbs of Los Angeles, 1920-1965 (Historical Studies of Urban America) $24.71 In the 1920s, thousands of white migrants settled in the Los Angeles suburb of South Gate. Six miles from downtown and adjacent to Watts, South Gate and its neighboring communities served as L.A.’s Detroit, an industrial belt for mass production of cars, tires, steel, and other durable goods. Blue-collar workers built the suburb literally from the ground up, using sweat equity rather than cash to … |

South America $11.18 Like many bands on the Victory roster, Thieves and Villains brew up a sound that’s simultaneously aggressive and sugary, with punk-pop and emo serving as main influences. South America is a fairly stripped-down record, though, emphasizing straightforward rock arrangements over the stacked, manicured production favored by most of the band’s Warped Tour comrades. The result is an album that embraces some tenets of the emo-pop handbook while abandoning others, and it’s those scattered differences that help South America establish its own identity. The 13 songs here — all of them perfectly pleasant and somewhat familiar-sounding — therefore rely on the arrangements, production, and instrument tones to carve out a unique place in the punk/emo world, and South America ends up being an exercise in not worrying about what you say, but how you say it. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi Performers: Mark Williams – Hammond B3, Piano |
