What are some good FREE websites where I can look into my genealogy?
Mostly I would like to be able to see if I have some relatives that have put up genealogy sites with information on our family. We are not a very close family and I have many relatives I’ve never met and know nothing about. I tried ancestry.com but it looked like you have to pay to even look at the websites and it’s kind of pricey.
My family is split between Oklahoma/Arkansas and Northern California (I know I have family in Stockton, Ukiah, and Napa Valley). I know this split occurred during the dust bowl. I also know I have some Native American ancestry and a lot of french-sounding names in my family line but that’s about it.
Also, I have an aunt that my parents hate and so I never talk to her and I’m sure she probably has a pretty extensive site somewhere. I remember genealogy interested her and she has a lot of free time being unemployed.

Look for the websites that have records. Those that only have family trees are not worth a plug nickel.
The trees are not submitted by some expert working for the websites but by the subscribers. You frequently will see different information on the same people from different subscribers. Then you will see the absolute same info on the same people from many different subscribes, BUT that doesn’t mean it is accurate by a long shot. Too many people copy without verifying. They can be helpful as clues only as to where to get the documentation. To get a good verifiable family tree you must have documentation and someone else’s URL is not quality documentation. If you find any of your family in one of the family trees and you disagree with information the subscriber has on them, those that run the websites will tell you that is between you and the other subscriber.
If you find Ancestry.Com too pricey, your public library might have a subscription to it you can use for free. They probably have more records online than any website. However, you must distinguish between their records and their subscriber submitted family trees. Particularly be wary of their One World Tree program. When they set it up they took information that subscribers had already submitted to their old Ancestry World Tree program and tried to combine all the different info different people had on the same person. I have seen more than once where they combined 2 people into 1. Their Personal or Public Family Trees can be helpful if you use them as a guide not as absolute fact unless the person has quality documentation and quality documentation is not someone else’s family tree. Even in a published book you must look for documentation. Even if you find a tree your aunt has done look for her documentation.
A Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church has records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City, they have the world’s largest genealogical collection. Their FHCs can order microfilm for you to view at a fee of about $3. I have never had them to try and convert me or have I heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources. Just visit their free website, FamilySearch.org, to get the hours for the general public to the nearest Mormon FHC.
